What is Tiger Barb Records?

Tiger Barb Records is a label for new and experimental music founded by double bassist Tom Peters in 2008. Our first release was John Cage: 26' 1.1499" for a String Player with 45' for a Speaker, which featured Tom on double bass with renowned guitarist and broadcaster John Schneider as speaker.

What is a Tiger Barb?

Barbus Tetrazona--the Tiger Barb is a small, tiger-striped fish native to Sumatra, and very common in home aquariums. Visit your local pet shop and you will probably see Tiger Barbs. Tiger Barbs are known to be feisty--the perfect mascot for a record label starting at a time when many feel that record labels are going the way of the dodo.

Mission and Vision

At Tiger Barb Records, we're aiming to be the record label of the future, not only in terms of forward-looking content but also in taking advantage of new distribution technologies in addition to traditional brick-and-mortar avenues. New ways of thinking are called for, as is a new business model. Artist control is key to our success.

Tiger Barb Records' Founder

Tom Peters is a classical double bassist and composer known for his interpretations of contemporary music, with a special interest in music for double bass and electronics. He has commissioned solo works for the bass by composers such as Mary Lou Newmark, Dennis Bathory-Kitsz, Eric Schwartz, Alex Shapiro, Richard Derby, and Robin Cox. In 2008, Tom released a recording of John Cage’s seminal work 26’ 1.1499” for String Player, with KPFK’s John Schneider performing Cage’s 45’ for a Speaker on the Tiger Barb Records label. An upcoming Tiger Barb Records release of music for double bass and electronics by women composers is slated for 2009.

Tom has performed with Southwest Chamber Music since 1998, and is a member of the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra, and Ensemble Green, a contemporary music ensemble based in Pasadena. He is featured in a series of solo concerts at Pasadena’s Boston Court Performing Arts Complex, and was featured in a live broadcast over Nordwest Radio in Germany in 2004. Tom teaches double bass at the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at California State University, Long Beach, and is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music.
